Our Mission
The Student Medical Ethics Journal (SMEJ) is designed to encourage high school, undergraduate students, and graduate students to explore the ethical aspects of medicine, clinical research, and health policy.
Our goal is for students to develop a deeper understanding of the ethical underpinnings of research and healthcare and to find new ways to incorporate these principles into practice. We hope a more ethically-conscious health profession will uplift the field and improve patient outcomes.

The journal is currently accepting submissions for the Spring 2025 issue which is due for publication in late August 2025.

Not Sure What To Write About?
Every medical decision and policy has important ethical concepts taken into consideration. A good place to start is the four pillars of medical ethics: autonomy, non-malfeasance, beneficence, and justice. Bearing these principles in mind, perspective pieces may focus on significant moments in medical ethics history, the importance of cultural sensitivity in medical training, medical ethics in media, or medical ethics related to current events. Writers must be professional when discussing contentious topics.
